Nyamecheo, GHC's eigth village, is in Kisii County. We began this CHEC in October 2022 and currently have 70 members involved in beekeeping and 8 fully trained apiary managers. The construction of the apiary was completed at the end of October and the Nyamagesa apiary will house 40 hives to start. The 8 apiary managers will be responsible for a sub-group and each group will receive 5 hives to manage. Nyamacheo sits in the perfect place for bees, tucked into a lush valley filled with flowering trees. The Nyamecheo apiary will house 40 hives to start and we expect it to thrive.
The climate here is warm and wet; there is no shortage of flora and water for our bees. As of February 5, 2024, 16 hives have been colonized and 11 have been moved into the apiary!
The Nyamecheo Apiary is buzzing with success! With70 dedicated members and an impressive 50 hives—all fully colonized—the apiary boasts a 100% colonization rate! During their first harvest in mid-November,Mark Orondo, GHHC's Apiary Manager, joined the members to collect 34 liters of honey from just 7hives—a remarkable start. When they heard about Nyasumi’s larger harvest, the members declaredthat next time, they’ll surpass their neighboring village, fueling a friendly and inspiring competition.
