Nyasumi, GHC's tenth village, is our first in Nyamira County. We began this CHEC in October 2022 and this is our largest club with 286 members! The Nyasumi apiary will eventually house 140 hives and the beekeeping group just finished building our largest apiary to date. We trained 28 apiary managers from this club and each one is responsible for its own sub-group. All sub-groups will be responsible for maintaining, inspecting and harvesting 5 hives.
The flora in this village is lush and plentiful, full of flowering trees, with a small river sitting beside the apiary. We have high hopes for this apiary as the environment is perfect for bees. As of March 2024, 50 hives have already been colonized, 35 of those have been moved into the apiary, and the group has added "supers" onto 18 hives.
The progress of this apiary has been incredibly fast and we attribute that to many things, the most important of which is the dedication and commitment this beekeeping group shows on a daily basis.
Nyasumi Village recently celebrated an exciting milestone with their first honey harvest! Under the guidance of Mark Orondo, GHHC's Apiary Manager, the members harvested an impressive 72 liters of honey from 15 of their 112 hives. Harvesting took place in the middle of the night, as the cooler, darker conditions make the bees less hostile. The beekeeping group was overwhelmed with joy at the abundant harvest.
